Who it fits

Key specs explained

Read Speed: Up to 130MB/s

This value indicates how fast the drive retrieves data. You will notice quicker transfers when moving large video files or photo libraries from the drive to your computer. This speed is significantly faster than older USB 2.0 drives, which typically cap around 40MB/s. For users who frequently back up media, this efficiency saves time compared to slower storage options.

USB Version: USB 3.1

This standard defines the connection interface and power delivery. USB 3.1 Gen 1 provides the bandwidth necessary for the stated 130MB/s read speeds. You must connect the drive to a compatible port on your host device to achieve optimal performance. Connecting to an older USB 2.0 port will still work but will limit transfer speeds to lower rates, affecting large file handling.

Storage Capacity: 256 GB

This figure represents the total space available for your files. The product data notes that the actual usable capacity is higher than 230GB due to formatting differences. This amount can hold approximately 64,000 12MP photos or 978 minutes of 1080P video. It suits users needing ample room for high-resolution media without relying on cloud storage solutions.

Write Speed: Up to 30MB/s

This metric shows how quickly you can save files to the drive. While slower than the read speed, it remains efficient for general backups and document storage. You should expect this rate for sustained writes. It is important to note that actual speeds vary based on file size and type. This speed is adequate for most everyday data archiving tasks.

Design and Build Overview

The Amazon Basics 256GB USB 3.1 Retractable Flash Drive features a compact, retractable telescopic design. According to the listing, the drive measures 2.24 inches in length, 0.79 inches in width, and 0.53 inches in height. It weighs just 0.32 ounces. The body is black and finished with a stylish appearance. The retractable mechanism protects the USB connector when not in use. This design choice helps prevent dust and debris from entering the port. It also reduces the risk of bending the connector during transport.

A key hole is included on the body. This allows you to attach the drive to a keychain or lanyard for easy carrying. The drive uses high-quality NAND FLASH memory chips. The listing states these chips effectively protect your data security. There is no integrated LED light indicator on the device. You will not see a light when data is being transferred. This keeps the design simple and uncluttered.

The drive is available in 128 GB and 256 GB sizes. The 256 GB model offers ample space for photos, videos, and songs. The listing notes that the available storage capacity is higher than 230 GB. This accounts for different measurement standards used by operating systems. The compact size and retractable feature make it suitable for users who need portable storage that fits easily into a pocket or bag.

Setup And Everyday Use

Setup begins with inserting the USB connector into a host device. The drive requires a USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 port to achieve optimal performance. If your computer only has USB 2.0 ports, the drive remains compatible but will operate at lower speeds. The listing notes that read speeds reach up to 130MB/s and write speeds up to 30MB/s under controlled conditions. These figures depend on your specific hardware and file types.

The drive ships formatted in FAT32. This format allows read and write access on both Windows and Mac OS systems. However, FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB. If you plan to transfer large video files or high-resolution photos that exceed this limit, you must reformat the drive to exFAT or NTFS. This step is necessary to avoid transfer errors.

Daily use involves storing photos, videos, and music. The 256GB capacity can hold approximately 64,000 12MP photos or 978 minutes of 1080P video. The retractable telescopic design protects the connector without needing a separate cap. A keyhole is included for attaching the drive to a lanyard or keyring. The listing states that high-quality NAND FLASH chips help protect data security. Note that there is no integrated LED light indicator to show activity. You will need to rely on your operating system’s progress bars to monitor transfer status.

Before you buy this drive

You should verify your host device has a USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 port to get the listed read speeds. Without it, transfers will be slower. Since the drive ships in FAT32 format, you must reformat it to exFAT or NTFS if you plan to move single files larger than 4GB. This step is essential for modern media workflows. Keep the telescopic cap closed when not in use to protect the connector from dust and physical damage. The retractable design helps, but the lack of an LED indicator means you cannot visually confirm active data transfer. Compare this option against other USB flash drives and memory cards on the page. If you need higher capacity or faster sustained write speeds for 4K video, other listings may suit you better. This drive is best for general photo and document storage.

Check before you buy

• Confirm your computer has a USB 3.1 or USB 3.0 port for optimal speed.
• Reformat the drive to exFAT if you need to transfer files larger than 4GB.
• Check if you need an LED light to monitor active data transfers.
• Ensure the 256GB capacity meets your storage needs for photos and videos.
